UFC BIO Cell Culture Grade DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), CAS 67-68-5, is a polar aprotic solvent for cell culture research, specified at ≥ 99.7% assay by GC on a dry weight basis.

It is 0.20 µm sterile filtered and tested for sterility to USP ⟨71⟩. Each lot is also controlled for identity by IR, water content, titratable acid and residue after evaporation.

Use DMSO as a component of cell freezing media or as a solvent for preparing research compound stocks. Select the final DMSO concentration and handling conditions for your cell type and experimental protocol.

Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and Certificate of Analysis (COA) available.

Common Applications

  • Cell cryopreservation: a cryoprotectant component for preparing cell freezing media according to a cell-specific protocol.
  • Compound stock preparation: a solvent for dissolving compatible compounds used in cell-based assays and screening studies.
  • Reagent preparation: solution preparation where DMSO is specified by the experimental method.

Storage and Handling

Store at 18 °C to 30 °C with the container tightly closed. DMSO is hygroscopic, so minimize exposure to moisture. Keep away from heat and ignition sources, and follow the SDS for handling and protective equipment.

DMSO freezes at about 18.5 °C (65 °F), so it may crystallize or solidify in cool storage or during shipping. This is a normal physical property and does not by itself indicate degradation. Let the closed container return to room temperature until fully liquid and mix gently before use. Do not microwave. Use aseptic technique when dispensing for cell culture work.

Quality Documentation

Each lot is supported by a Certificate of Analysis (COA) with the specifications and actual lot results. Enter the Lot/Batch Number printed on the product label in the COA search on the Documents tab. If your certificate is not available online, contact info@ufcbio.com. The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is available on the same tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this differ from ACS, USP, NF grade DMSO?

D67685-BIO is the cell culture grade: it is 0.20 µm sterile filtered and tested for sterility to USP ⟨71⟩. The separate ACS, USP, NF grade DMSO has its own chemical specifications. Choose the grade documented for your application.

Can I use it to prepare cell freezing medium?

DMSO is commonly used as a cryoprotectant component in cell freezing media. This product is concentrated DMSO; prepare the freezing medium according to your cell line's recommended protocol. The appropriate concentration and freezing procedure depend on the cell type.

Is it sterile?

Yes. The product is 0.20 µm sterile filtered and each lot is tested for sterility according to USP ⟨71⟩. Use aseptic technique once the bottle is opened.

Why has my DMSO solidified?

DMSO freezes at about 18.5 °C, close to room temperature, so it can crystallize in cool conditions. Let the closed bottle warm to room temperature until fully liquid before dispensing.

Is this material of animal origin?

No. The material is of non-animal, non-human origin.

What is the shelf life?

Use the expiration date printed on the product label and the COA for your lot.

Which sizes are available?

A single 50 mL bottle or a pack of five 50 mL bottles.
